Is my notebook information secure?

Hi,

A couple weeks ago, a friend's backpack with his notebook was stolen. I don't need to say, that he didn't recover anything from the backpack.

This made me think. What if it was my backpack that was stolen? I'm not interested in the notebook value price, or in the time that I'll take to get another notebook running, but I'm thinking about all the information stored in it. All the important documents and email's, both from work an personal.

Of course that I regularly backup my data, so I'm not afraid of losing this information.

I'm worried about how I can prevent the burglar from reading the important information that is stored in my notebook and/or external hard-drive!

What are the best practices I should implement in my notebook to prevent this? Is Windows Vista BitLocker functionality enough?

Food for thought!

Regards,

André Correia
